The best toys infants and toddlers can enjoy safely

There are so many toys out there on the market, both online and in the physical shops. Do you sometimes worry

About the materials used of the toys, you give to your children? I do, mostly since I learned about standards of toy safety which are quite limited really. What are the best toys infants and toddlers can enjoy safely?

This question I asked myself, especially having a baby walking around chewing on most objects laying around.

After learning more about the risks of materials used in certain toys, I am planning a cleanout of our current toys and ideally upgrading our selection with safer and more sustainable options.  Play is essential for children’s development, but I do worry about some of the items we have in our household and would like to have peace of mind.

Why is play so important?

‘Play is talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is the work of childhood’.

– Mr Rogers

I came across this beautiful quote recently on the website of a sustainable clothing brand I wrote a review for; their clothes designs are created out of the perspective of children, I love the philosophy this brand represents. I thought it was quite inspiring.

When children are young learning is joyful and playful, learning is fun. Soon when children grow older, they get pressurised to learn from quite a young age, and their genuine interest of education disappears to the background, such a shame.

Children want to play, it is the way they learn, and I believe it is beneficial to offer education through play for young children.

Cognitive development is how children think, explore and find solutions. Through play, children have the opportunity to solve problems and find answers and help understand the world around them. As a parent, we can support our children in their development from a very young age.

Play allows children to use their creativity while developing imagination, cognitive, physical and emotional strengths.

It is through play that children learn to engage and interact with their environment, and this process starts from a very early age. Game is essential for healthy brain development.

Toys are one of the tools which can be used in children’s play to stimulate development. You may wonder what toys can be used as a positive tool, and what toys can be avoided if possible?

What toys to avoid?

When buying toys, it is essential to look at age-appropriate toys but also uses your judgment of toys seems safe for your child. Recently I learned that toy testing is a relatively basic principal, and your discretion is advisable to ensure safety.

There are many mass-produced toys, and as with many products on the market where the main goal is profit, quality could be compensated. I am not saying that all mass-produced toys are dangerous or harmful, but I think your judgement on toy safety is a must.

You would like to think that everything made for babies and kids is safe, and most likely, the intention has been excellent and well willing. The rules may have been sharpened for toy safety, but previous accidents with toys are not an exception.

At all times, avoid potentially toxic materials like BPA, phthalates, lead, formaldehyde, flame retardant, chemicals and PVC. Just make sure to read labels when you are not sure of items which may contain such materials.

How can I support my child’s cognitive development?

Play is the way your child discovers the world around them. It is essential to play with your child and build strong relationships. The parent is the most important person for a child and playing together with your little people is beneficial for bonding and development.

You can do this by talking and reading and singing for your baby. Also, let baby move and explore age-appropriate toys. When your baby grows a bit older, you can offer puzzles and books and craft. When your toddler has an interest in a specific topic, you can use that to expand activity on this topic.

It is beneficial to give your child space to find solutions without prompting, so they have the opportunity to learn to understand a new toy or task.

Safe toys for children, what are eco toys?

We are lucky that more Brands are offering safe toys which are environmentally friendly as well. Eco-friendly toys are environmentally safe because the materials used to create the toys are biodegradable and recyclable.

Eco toys are a natural choice as these toys use water-based paints which is a safer option for children and reduce chemical waste.  Wood will recycle and in time, break down what makes eco toys a more sustainable and more reliable choice than mass-produced toys.

  1. Thank you so much for this highly informative article, Jude! Child safety is certainly becoming a more and more prevalent issue in our society today, and we definitely need to make sure that our children can play and learn safely. I do not have children, but I spend a lot of time with my little cousins (ages 1 to 5). I see how rough they are with their toys and how they like to put things in their mouths, and I’m always careful to make sure that they don’t hurt themselves. It’s also important to make sure that our children are learning while they’re having fun. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional “mindless fun,” but we want to develop our children’s intellectual and life skills as much as possible. I love the toys that you suggested, and I will definitely share your article with my family and friends. God bless you!

  2. Thanks, Jude for this informative article. It’s great the see these organic eco toys being offered for children to play with these days. And there’s peace of mind knowing they’re safe for our little ones if the toy ends up in the baby’s mouth. As a mom, we all want the best for our children’s development. I remember reading to my babies often and playing with them. They loved it.

    • Hi Regina, thanks a lot for your comment. Yes, I am so excited as well to see so many wonderful safe options. I just feel a bit greedy seeing all these beautiful toys. And yes, how they love the interaction with their parents right. My eldest daughter always asks to play with her, soon enough she probably doesn’t want to play with me anymore so we make the most of it, they grow quick enough. My youngest daughter is 1 and she laughs so loud when you play with her, it is super cute and I never heard a baby laugh so loud before I met her.
Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
      Best wishes.

  3. Eco toys are best and safe for babies. Also, parents should give little bigger size toys to their kids that can’t go in the mouth very easily. Kids are known to put anything other than food in their mouth 🙂 Thank you for this helpful article.

It is just a way of learning for them too and some do it more than others. It is peace of mind that eco toys are at least safe to put in the mouth.
Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it.

  6. Thanks for this valuable article, I really enjoyed reading it.
I have almost a 2-year old daughter and she has learned so much through playing with her toys(and with me of course). I’m happy seeing her development and I think that so far the most helpful in her cognitive learning was playing with the household items, dolls, puppets and animals.
As you said, the first 3 years of a child’s life are crucial for his/her brain development, and I’m glad I’m a stay home mum and can go through this learning process with her!
    Keep up the good work:)

  7. What a well-researched and written article, Jude!
When it comes to babies, we automatically assume everything we buy in the stores is safe for them to use. This is why your article helps so much in staying educated about what kind of toys to look for, that not only improves their playtime but is also safe for them to play with.

My best friend has two young kids and each time she buys anything for them, clothes, toys, etc, she comes home and washes them. Do you think that this is pertinent in baby care or is this just borderline paranoia, lol?

    • Thanks for your comments, Sacha. Yes, this is so true. You would just presume things are tested and safe but unfortunately, second-guessing is recommended with probably any product but definitely baby products.
Washing everything before use, I suppose it is a personal choice, some people do, some people don’t. It is recommended with many things with one of the reasons being to remove any potential manufacturing residue. As infants are so vulnerable I think we try to eliminate as much as possible danger what can harm them.
Thanks a lot for stopping by, I appreciate your comment.
